La Cordeline Jute Twine 5mm
About this deal
Water early in the day so that any water that splashed the leaves has a chance to dry out before the temperature cools. You can also tie up the foliage to prevent wind damage and to prevent water from settling in the crown. They must be sheltered from cold winds, apart from in milder seaside locations where cordyline grows well and is tolerant of salt-laden winds.

Mine have been in the ground around 10 years - they started flowering after around three or four years. To avoid water building up in the pot, either stand pots on gravel or raise just off the ground so excess water drains freely. These plants can be damaged by fluoride, so if you live in an area where the tap water is high in fluoride you should water them with rainwater. If the plant does not need repotting, remove the top few centimetres of soil and replace it with fresh to keep your plant in good condition.

As well as green-leaved cultivars, there are some with dark red or purple foliage, or with yellow, pink or white stripes. You can also supplement this with an extra liquid feed in June and July when they are growing at their strongest. It might even be too easy, as it can grow quickly and become a nuisance if you're not paying attention.Cordyline slime flux develops when a damaged part of the stem becomes colonised by bacteria that normally reside harmlessly in the soil or on the stem surface. The biology is similar to that of clematis slime flux, although it is thought that in trees the bacteria most usually colonise the plant through the roots. Remove the lower leaves, dip the stem in hormone rooting compost and insert into pots of potting compost mixed with horticultural grit.
