Outside of the obvious improvement with the screw back case, I prefer the aesthetics of the face and the resin throughout has a much nicer feel (even after putting a 5000 resin strap on my 5610). BUT, the resin used on the GW-5000 is far better than what’s on the 5610, it’s more supple and comfortable.Like the early G-Shock models, it has a screw-lock case back and is one of the only current G-Shocks, along with the digital Frogman and GMW-B5000, with this type of build. The case is a combination of stainless steel and resin what the clock elegant, robust yet lightweight makes. It feels good to know that I can put a watch on that will endure as much beating as I’m about to put myself through, whether that’s for play or my other work as a tree trimmer.

It’s clear from your post that you want a GW-5000U, and I am a big proponent of getting what you want in life. The new white LED light is definitely easier for me to see in the pitch black with blurry eyes in the morning.

The new “U” editions have the same designs but with an LED light (versus the old EL backlight) and a new module offering enhanced functions, such as adjustable light afterglow, time display in stopwatch and timer mode, timer settable in seconds, adjustable date format and language, and more. You can get it wet, covered in dirt or sawdust or sand, bang it, drop it, leave it outside on the lawn all night - and it'll just keep on doing what it does flawlessly. Its shares the same module as non-steel watches that have been produced in far greater numbers, so replacements and spares are virtually guaranteed. I’d caveat that by saying that it is to me; I like the heritage of the steel case harking back to the first G-Shock watches in the 1980’s.
