Remarkably Bright Creatures: A Read with Jenna Pick
About this deal
Katie had gone through a phase where she tried to ban phones from their bedroom after she read some article about how the light was addictive. How does the use of these non-human elements contribute to the novel’s exploration of interconnectedness and agency?
I listened to Shelby Van Pelt's book, Remarkably Bright Creatures, on audiobook and I highly recommend listening to the book. And like everyone else, I loved Marcellus and heard the “Sad Cat Diary” narrator each time he voiced a chapter that really brought a smile to my face . For Tova, this job is a life saver, a place for her to be, a place she is needed, welcomed, and cherished by the aquarium manager.Santiago, the veterinarian, had dropped by with a cake that read, in cursive icing: HIP-HIP-HOORAY FOR HIPPOCAMPUS BABIES! After Tova Sullivan's husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. As his affection for Tova grows, Marcellus must use every trick his old, invertebrate body can muster to unearth the truth for her before it’s too late.
Ethan helps Cameron get settled, giving him a place to park his van and helping him find a maintenance job at the local aquarium.
Meanwhile, we also meet Cameron Cassmore of Modesto, California, a 30-year-old who was abandoned at age 9 by his mother to live with his Aunt Jeanne. Concurrently, animals also serve as reminders of the characters’ ties or lack thereof to the natural world, and their reactions to these animals give us insight into their perspectives and backgrounds.
