About this deal

After reading this story, we will be looking at the character traits that The Good Egg has at the beginning, middle, and end of the story. The other 11 eggs are destructive and naughty, fighting among themselves, breaking things, picking on the Good Egg (one page shows a "kick me" sign taped to his back), and there are seemingly no consequences to their bad behavior -- although they (mostly) straighten up by the end.

The Good Egg Book Review | Common Sense Media

The extreme bad behavior of the other eggs is unrealistic, and the author has the Good Egg deal with that behavior by going on a solo journey of “self care,” including going to a spa and “breathing in and out. Life is tough for our little friend as he’s teased and ignored while trying very hard to get the other eggs to live up to his standards. Maybe I'm taking it too seriously, but it felt as though the message was twisted from "perfectionism isn't always the way; self-care is important too" to "I've changed and taken better care of myself, but I'm lonely so I'll go back to those who abuse me.Read aloud sessions are a wonderful way for children to understand the connection between written text and spoken language. The message about just letting some things go--that not everything has to be perfect all the time--is a nice one. Changing our behavior and taking care of ourselves is great, but continuing to be bullied and used by bad people for their own entertainment is not, especially if THAT is the reason you have to take extra care of yourself.

I don't like binary descriptions of beings as "good" or "bad"; eventually, the nameless good egg (the other eleven eggs have egg-y names or are named "Frank") decides they don't need to be perfect, just like their "friends" aren't. I guess my take on it is a lot different from a lot of the other readers who feel the message is about not worrying about others' bad behaviors and not trying to "fix" everyone around you. Then after he recovers from the trauma they inflicted on him he decides to go back because he's lonely. The Good Egg is a positive role model for his willingness to help others, his attempt to remedy bad behavior of those around him, and mostly for his ability to step away from his comfort zone to prioritize his own well-being. It's a perfect story for today's overworked, always-on-alert parents and kids, complete with tips for de-stressing. It was also a nice concept and the message is pretty good in itself that sometimes you just have to let go but the text and the execution wasn't that great.
