About this deal

For more than three fourths of the book I was asking this question and when they did meet I was really disappointed. But the death isn't ruled a murder—and might never have been if one of the gang—a cadging sybarite named Bunny Corcoran—hadn't shown signs of cracking under the secret's weight.

A George III Act to Enlarge the Powers of, and to Render more effectual, the several Acts for Paving, Cleaning, Lighting and Otherwise Regulating the Squares, Streets and Other Places within the City and Liberty of Westminster; and for Extending the Provisions of the Said Acts to the Surrey Side of Westminster Bridge.

Although the fall is entirely Jake’s fault, Arthur suffers immense guilt because he did not believe that Jake was really falling and not only ignored his cries for help, but when Jake finally said, “I’m going to fall” (83), Arthur says “Good” (83), which haunts him for the remainder of the novel. Soon two utterly polarised characters are established: Arthur is slow, reserved, responsible and essentially good; Jake is quick, clever, unscrupulous and bad.

If Matt Morrison, the brilliant and adored older brother in Crow Lake, had wandered into this book, which character do you think he would have had more in common with, Ian or Pete? There are communists, nazis and fascists all competing against one another, each in their own way equally dangerous.

It talks about when you’re in a fight with someone you’re in a relationship with and you’re like, “Leave me alone, don’t ever talk to me – I hate you! The other story belongs to Dave Riley (a man who lost his wife and kids in a car accident,) and discusses how he copes with the loss. This dichotomy remains throughout the novel, with Arthur in the more masculine role while Jake is continually the more feminine character.

This story involves two parallel stories involving the bridge, but an entirely different ending from what I predicted. When life and his dream slowly converge, he might be able to see that little hope, and seeing that little light of hope begins a journey he only ever dreamed about. This is the story of two individuals with ties to the Golden Gate bridge's construction via family members.
