Nevertheless, Tracy determinedly shows up on Melrose Avenue and meets with Evie and her friend Astrid. This film should be shown in high schools or a parent should watch it with their child and then have a talk with them afterwards.

The last scene shows a dream sequence of Tracy spinning alone and screaming on a park merry-go-round during the daytime.I'll give Thirteen a 4 out of 10, which is the highest rating I'll give a film I couldn't sit all the way through. The tight bond between Holly Hunter's ageing hippy chick, Melanie, and the apple of her eye, Tracy (Evan Rachel Wood), soon starts to wear under the pressure of Tracy's budding friendship with local bad girl Evie (Nikki Reed). A disturbing, although hyperbolic, look at teenage rebellion, Thirteen succeeds in spite of an extremely unlikeable protagonist that is a caricature of a melodramatic teenager. If you can restrain your temperament throughout the many scenes of vast obnoxiousness, gross injustice and scores of vulgar, idiotic characters - I salute you. Aside from Charlize Theron in Monster, and Felicity Huffmann in Transamerica, I can't think of a better performance than Hunter's.
The performances from the two lead actresses were what made this film much better than what it turned out to be. Carne and Merchant try to find a way to ensure her safety, but have underestimated Mark White, putting themselves in danger. Critics cite by comparison films like Lucas Moodysson's first feature, `Show Me Love' (Otherwise titled `Fucking Amal'), where the lesbian relationship between its 2 teenagers makes the story eccentric rather than universal.

It's not as easy as it sounds when Evie peer pressures Tracy into doing things such as stealing, drugs, piercings, and sex-- far from the Tracy everybody seems to know. This role is very, very racy for any 15 year old to take on, and Reed, who also co-wrote this film's terrific script with Catherine Hardwicke, takes it on with maturity I've never seen before from an actress of her age. The film would show them that Tracy isn't cool or radical; she's just another kid in the midst of a predictable, cringe-worthy cycle that has been experienced by millions from all generations.
