Though renowned as one of the pioneers of Dixieland-style jazz in the 1920s, Armstrong was no stranger to the pop charts in the 1960s, having topped Billboard’s Hot 100 with the Grammy-winning single, “Hello Dolly,” in 1964.

Billboard reviewed the single upon its release, giving it four stars and writing, "Moderate rocker gets a smooth belt from Sam Cooke in his usual, salable style.Luke also easily caught on to the repetition of the line "What a wonderful world" and especially enjoyed the page filled with hearts for the lyric "I love you. We sing through this book together, Squirt and I, and always get stuck on the rainbow page, where he picks a colour and pretends to slide down the rainbow. This brings it to a kids' level of seeing the wonder, but applying that to the world and not just the immediate things around them.

Herman's Hermits had a major hit in the mid-1960s with an uptempo version of the song (omitting one verse) which reached number one in Canada,  number four in the US, and number seven in the UK.
