About this deal
Flat pack furniture, especially from the European brands, actually is designed to come apart, be packed back up, then moved to a new location. Also, for general knowledge (international audience) ViceGrips™ are a brand name for locking pliers that has become a "common name" (like Kleenex™ for facial tissue, or Coke™ for soda). It's a great-looking and flexible range but just wish there was something other than dowels to fit it all together.
Get a drill bit slightly smaller than the hole (you don't want to damage the sides) and drill out the broken dowel. He suggested sanding down the end of each dowel so it doesn't have a rough, unfinished look, which could make the piece look cheap. If all else fails, another option would be to drill a small hole and glue in a piece of wire using epoxy resin, then pull out the entire thing once it's set.
In this post we will answer some of the most common questions about dowels in flat pack and ready to assemble furniture. Locking pliers gripped to the dowel (perpendicular) and hammer on the locking pliers to pull the dowel out of the material. A very unlikely design component but Claire managed to pull off this awesome BILLY bookcase hack and provide a fun twist to the otherwise plain old BILLY doors.
I got a screwdriver for a watch screw and tried to use a hammer to try to get it sufficiently far in there such that I could kind of lever it it, but that did not help. It’s renewable, recyclable, durable, ages beautifully and it is an important part of our Scandinavian design heritage. The glue doesn't just lie between the surfaces (as some adhesives on some surfaces will do) because wood is porous and the glue soaks in (I am sure there is a technical term for that), and I think the dowels, which are often tight-fitting to begin with (by design) may even swell just a little bit from the water in the glue.
If you're unable to remove a dowel by hand use a pair of pliers to get more leverage and the dowel should come straight out. Simply put, all of KALLAX is well-thought-out down to the smallest detail and exudes a solid feel of quality – which results in a nicer and more timeless impression. That may leave 1/2 a dowel in a hole, but that's OK because these dowels are not critical in and of themselves. However usually this is because manufacturers, like Ikea, over supply the amount of dowels compared to the amount listed in the instructions.
